Republic Cement’s Plastic Neutrality initiatives help companies become more environmentally sustainable through offering plastic and solid waste recycling and co-processing. Plastic Neutrality allows companies to offset the amount of plastic packaging they use during production or operations through an equivalent amount of plastics recycled or recovered. Through this program, companies are provided with a clear path towards environmental sustainability.
The Philippines is one of the biggest plastic polluters in the WORLD.
In a recent study by Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey. Center for Business and Environment, the Philippines ranked as the third largest source of plastic leaking into the ocean and has one of the highest trash collection rates in Southeast Asia.
A separate study by NGO Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) showed that Filipinos use 163 million plastic sachet packets, 48 million shopping bags, and 45 million thin film bags daily.
For almost 20 years, the use of alternative fuels and raw materials has been a part of Republic Cement’s manufacturing process. Through co-processing, the thermal or mineral properties of qualified waste, which include plastics, are recovered and used as fuel in the production of cement. This is widely considered as a more environmentally friendly alternative to landfilling and chemical treatment waste management options.
In order to make this approach successful, Republic partners with companies from various industries in order to recover residues and waste. To date, Republic Cement has partnered with three major organizations in their goal to become Plastic Neutral. These are Hope in a Bottle, Nestle Philippines, and two companies under the Century Pacific Group: Century Pacific Food and Shakey’s Pizza Asia Venture (PIZZA). In the future, Republic aims to partner with more companies as well as municipalities looking to become Plastic Neutral.
Republic Cement has been the Philippines’ partner in transforming the country through nation-building for over 60 years. Republic’s products continue to be the cement of choice for building a stronger Republic, with trusted brands such as REPUBLIC, FORTUNE, RapidSET, Kapit-Balay, MINDANAO, and WallMASTER. These products are manufactured at six strategically located plants across the nation.
“With more Filipino companies embracing the plastic-neutrality concept, we are confident that we are making strides for a greener, stronger Republic,” said Nabil Francis, Republic Cement Services, Inc. CEO. “Ultimately, this is about preserving the environment for Filipinos for generations to come.”
