Climate Change Mitigation

Blended Cement

We are further reducing the environmental footprint of our products by replacing clinker in our blended cement with carbon-neutral minerals or industrial byproducts.

REPUBLIC PORTLAND PLUS is the only blended cement manufactured in the country using fly ash, an industrial by-product of the power industry. The use of fly ash increases the strength and durability of concrete over time, bringing its own enhancement to the product.

Some years back, Republic participated in a study of construction materials (‘life-cycle analysis’) alongside WWF Philippines and the UP College of Engineering. In comparing the footprint versus ordinary Portland cement, REPUBLIC PORTLAND PLUS was found to have a lower environmental impact of around 25 percent.

Alternative Fuels

The cement industry is heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Traditionally, the cement manufacturing process relies heavily on coal as its main source of fuel. For several years now, however, we have been using sustainable alternative fuels such as rice husk, saw dust, and refuse-derived fuel, substituting our fossil fuel requirements. This switch to sustainable, alternative fuel sources contributes to our continuing efforts to achieve a lower carbon footprint, contributing to about 18 – 25% reduction in CO2 in our operations, and to help address the solid waste disposal problem in Metro Manila.

On June 28, 2013, we launched a reforestation program across our seven plants, with more than 400 volunteers planting simultaneously in four separate sites in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The program sought to reforest 850 hectares of denuded forest land with hard wood and fruit-bearing trees.

Today, we have exceeded our target of 400,000 trees. We continue to take stewardship over these areas, ensuring their maintenance and protection until we turn them over to the government in 2016. The program will continue to provide livelihood for more than 400 families, members of the Peoples Organizations who we partnered with in the implementation of the program. These families will also benefit from the produce of the fruit-bearing trees and other crops planted in our reforestation sites, for years to come.

Co-Processing with Republic - A Sustainable Waste Management Solution

A megacity like Metro Manila generates ~8,000 tons of waste everyday.  While a portion of that is recycled, a significant portion is sent to sanitary landfills.  Landfilling continues to be a preferred waste management solution in the Philippines due to cost considerations.  However, it requires huge tracts of land and when managed improperly can negatively result in ground and water contaminations.

Co-processing at cement plants is a sustainable waste management solution as it allows for the simultaneous recovery of thermal and/or mineral resources of wastes from other sources for use in cement manufacture.  Co-processing is thus a more environmental-friendly alternative to landfilling and chemical treatment waste management options and offers the following advantages:

  • Complete Combustion
  • Zero Ultimate Wastes
  • Lower CO2 Emissions

Republic cement plants have been co-processing wastes since 2002.  Our extensive experience in co-processing wastes includes biomass, refuse-derived fuel from segregated,  pre-processed municipal solid wastes and also serves other industries’ need for safe and sustainable management of their wastes including government-regulated wastes.
