Posted May 30, 2017
With a shared vision to uplift communities through socially responsible programs, Republic Cement and Gawad Kalinga recently solidified its partnership for the establishment of the first Kusina ng Kalinga (KnK) in Taysan, Batangas.

Republic Cement, which operates a plant in Barrio Mapulo, Taysan, has funded the refurbishment of a 60-sq. meter room in Taysan Central School, turning it into a kitchen that will provide nutritious lunch meals for its students as well as those in three other nearby schools, namely: Pagasa Elementary School, Bilogo Elementary School, and Mapulo Elementary School.

The program, made possible with the cooperation of the Department of Education and the municipal government of Taysan, targets to feed a total of 750 students from Kinder to Grade 3 level for the School Year 2017-2018, in line with Gawad Kalinga’s goal of addressing undernourishment and malnutrition among public schoolchildren.

“We believe that this partnership with GK concretizes our commitment to positively impact the communities we operate in, as a responsible corporate citizen. We are not only feeding schoolchildren—we are feeding our future movers and shakers, we are nourishing dreams,” said Renato Sunico, President of Republic Cement and Building Materials, Inc.

Jose Emilio Oquinena, Movement Building Head of Gawad Kalinga, expressed his appreciation to the company for spearheading Kusina ng Kalinga’s operation in the province.

“This is the realization of bayanihan, the coming together of the government and private sector. We thank Republic Cement for leading the charge in showing what a kitchen can offer (in Taysan) and what we can achieve when we work hand in hand,” he said.

The partnership has earned the support and appreciation of the local government unit, led by Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas and Taysan Mayor Grande Gutierrez. Both commended Republic Cement’s strong sense of corporate social responsibility towards helping the community, and for the extensive role it plays by being the only cement manufacturing plant in South Luzon.

“Napakapalad namin dahil meron kaming kaagapay, tulad nang Republic Cement at Gawad Kalinga, para matugunan ang mga nutrisyonal na pangangailangan ng aming mga bata sa Taysan. (We are very fortunate because we have partners like Republic Cement and Gawad Kalinga to address the nutritional needs of our children in Taysan.)” expressed Taysan  Mayor Grande Guttierez.

The LGU in Taysan will provide its counterpart, consisting of full-time workers to assist in food preparation and logistics, utilities, and transportation to ensure food is delivered to the beneficiary-schools.

Sunico explained that, in addition to the grant fund, crops being grown in the vegetable garden inside the plant will be contributed as ingredients for the food preparation in the central kitchen.

He also expressed hope that the success of KnK-Taysan will be replicated in the other areas where Republic Cement conducts its operations.
