Republic Cement Awarded for Safety, Environment Friendliness

Leading cement manufacturer Republic Cement bagged key awards at the 62nd Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC) in recognition of its safe and environment-friendly operations.

Three of Republic Cement’s plants won recognition in various categories: the Batangas Plant as the winner in the Safest Cement Operation Award and the Safest Mining Operation - Non-Metallic Category; the Bulacan Plant as a recipient of the Titanium Environmental Award; and the Teresa Plant as runner-up in the Safest Cement Operation Award.

“These awards once again highlight our commitment to excellence through safe, efficient, and environmentally responsive plant practices,” says Don Lee, President of Republic Cement Services, Inc., noting that the company has continuously sought to enhance its operations through innovation and sustainable initiatives.

Republic Cement pioneered total ash management partnerships with companies operating coal-fired power plants in the country. Fly-ash produced from coal power generation is used as an additive to the cement. Called “Tibay Enhancers,” this provides improved cement workability and smoother finish, while minimizing carbon footprint in the cement manufacturing process.

Republic Cement complements these innovations in operation by intensifying safety campaigns among its employees. Safety standards covering high-risk activities, guidelines for transport equipment and stockpile, as well as policies for the use of protective equipment, risk assessment, work permits and serious events review are part of the organization’s integrated Health & Safety Management System.

“Sustainability and safety are two of our top priorities, and they are central in all aspects of our operations,” reiterated Lee, who shared that Republic Cement has consistently reaped recognition at the ANMSEC. Last year, Republic’s Bulacan and Batangas plants also received the Titanium Environment Award for their promotion of safety development and environmental performance in their operations.

The ANMSEC is conducted annually by the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association to promote the healthy exchange of best practices in occupational safety, health, environmental protection, and social development in the mining industry.

Republic Cement, formerly Lafarge Republic, operates a nationwide network of cement plants, grinding facility and aggregates quarry providing a broad supply and delivery envelop for its various clientele and dealers.
